What is Autism?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disability and a spectrum disorder. As a complex neurobiological disorder, it affects an individuals ability to form relationships, communicate and reason. There is no known cure for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
ASD falls under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), in the DSV IV-TR. What is true for all disorders listed under PDD is that these disorders are characterized by "severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development," which includes social interaction and communication skills. There are five disorders that fall under PDD.
- Autistic Disorder
- Asperger's Disorder
- Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD)
- Rett's Syndrome
- Pervasive Developmental Disorders - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)
