Barnyard Bash a Smashing Success

Barnyard Bash a Smashing Success Jack’s Barnyard Bash, the farm-to-table dinner this month hosted by Chef Brett Smith of Zolo Grill and other talented chefs of Big Red F Restaurant Group to raise summer camp funds for ASBC, was a magical event. With the Flatirons and the surrounding fields of Isabelle Farms as the backdrop, everyone who attended was treated to a sampling of some of the finest food in Boulder County, from barbecued ribs, roasted boar sopas, and prosciutto-wrapped scallops, to chilled avocado soup and mini tamales. Zolo mixed the margaritas, and Sweet Cow provided s'mores, maple-bacon and other inventive flavors of ice cream.
The most moving part of the evening was when Brett spoke to the crowd about the inspiration behind this affair: his mentor, Chef John Ferrigno, who was in Boulder with his family for this special event, and John's son Jack, who had autism. Jack died when he was only nine years old, but in his short lifetime, as his mom and dad explained, they had difficulty finding summer camps that could accommodate his special needs, places where Jack could be himself.

The Jack Henry Ferrigno Camp Grants were born out of this relationship between Brett and the Ferrigno family, with the intention of giving as many children with autism as possible the opportunity to participate in summer camps that would not only provide some therapeutic benefit but also allow them the opportunity to truly be themselves.

What does this mean for the families served by the Autism Society of Boulder County? Brett and crew raised enough money with Jack's Barnyard Bash to provide additional camp grants, beyond the grants that ASBC already funded in May.

If you missed our April 30 deadline, or if you were reluctant to apply for a camp grant this year because you received a Jack Henry Ferrigno Camp Grant in 2012 and therefore thought you would be ineligible, then please do apply now.

An online application form is available on the ASBC website under ASBC Grants. Fill out the application completely, then click on Submit. The deadline for applying for this second round of grants is July 1.

We are indebted to Brett Smith, the Ferrigno family, and everyone affiliated with Zolo Grill of Boulder for their overwhelming generosity and kindness. We can never sufficiently thank them for the life-changing experiences they make possible for local families who are affected by autism.
