"We used the [Send a Kid to Camp grant] money to send our son, a 17-year-old with Asperger's, to the Juniper Institute for Young Writers, held at the Amherst campus of the University of Massachusetts. This camp enabled him to further develop his writing talent, but perhaps more importantly for him and for us, it provided an opportunity for him to get a taste of independent mobility and residence life prior to applying for college. As a result of this experience, we are now much more confident--and he feels more prepared--for his managing the responsibilities of independent living in college. It was a great foundation to build on both academically and socially."
