ASBC's iCan Shine Bike Clinic

Date: 23-Jul-2018

What: iCan Shine Bike Clinic Hosted by Autism Society of Boulder County

iCan Shine’s iCan Bike program teaches individuals with disabilities how to ride a conventional bike and become a lifelong independent rider! iCan Bike uses a fleet of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and a trained staff to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike. Riders attend the same 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days (M – F) whereby they are physically assisted and encouraged by two volunteer “spotters”. Over the course of the 5-day camp the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. Watch this video to answer all your questions about the iCan Bike program.

Volunteers Needed We need 10 volunteers per session for 5 sessions according to the time schedule below.  It is strongly recommended that volunteers commit to attending the same session for all five days. The riders generally make more progress if they can count on the same volunteer supporting them each day. Getting to know a new volunteer each day can be a challenge for a rider who is trying to master a new skill. It's also amazing to watch how fast the riders progress throughout the week. You don't want to miss your rider when they ride independently for the first time! However, we understand that this is a huge time commitment, and If you can't volunteer all five days, we appreciate any time you can contribute. This is a great opportunity for high school clubs, church groups, businesses or sports leagues who are looking for a chance to give back as a group. If you're looking for an amazing volunteer experience where you get to see an immediate impact, come join us!

Parents/Guardians/Caregivers: All riders must have an appropriate personal bike available for the iCan Bike program by no later than Thursday (Day #4) of the program.  Please watch this video to learn about the iCan Shine bike requirements https://youtu.be/y0o2vNLCw2Y?list=PLacGrgzsb1W0m42chBD1NiBFgYPxEB3R0 The goal is to transition all riders to their personal bike towards the latter part of the iCan Bike program so that they are comfortable with the bike they will be riding at home.  Parents may or may not have an appropriate bike available.   Click here  to learn about bike requirements and helpful tips for parents. Please plan on having the family member or designee who will be helping the rider at home at the camp on Friday, the last day of camp. The iCan Shine staff will train you on how to best assist your rider at home. Your student will have the best chance of becoming an independent rider if he/she continues practicing after the camp is over.
