ASBC's iCan Shine Bike Clinic

Date: 17-Jul-2017

What: iCan Shine Bike Clinic Hosted by Autism Society of Boulder County - Camp is full but you can get on a waitlist in case there are cancellations

iCan Shine’s iCan Bike program teaches individuals with disabilities how to ride a conventional bike and become a lifelong independent rider! iCan Bike uses a fleet of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and a trained staff to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike. Riders attend the same 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days (M – F) whereby they are physically assisted and encouraged by two volunteer “spotters”. Over the course of the 5-day camp the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. Watch this video to answer all your questions about the iCan Bike program.

Session One Sponsor: Thank you to Progresh who is providing the majority of volunteers for session #1. As our families know, Progresh is one of our community partners offering their facility at a deeply discounted rate for us to have family activities that the kids and adults love. Click here for more information about our next event at Progresh.  Click here to learn more about Progresh on their website.

Volunteers Needed: We need 12 volunteers per session for 5 sessions. It is strongly recommended that volunteers commit to attending the same session for all five days. If that is not possible, there is an option to enter dates and times that you are available during the week. If you are interested in your group being a sponsor of this event through providing volunteers, all you have to do is round up 12 volunteers to attend the same session Mon-Fri. Please contact Julie Darrow at info@autismboulder or 720-272-8231 if you're interested in this opportunity. If you are not part of a bigger group and would like to volunteer, please fill out the Online Volunteer Registration form.

It's a great workout and very rewarding to work with the kids as they achieve their bike-riding goals. Volunteers will run alongside riders inside the gym at Ascent Community Church. As the riders progress, we will move outdoors into the parking area. We need two volunteers per rider.  Volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

This is a great opportunity for high school clubs, church groups, businesses or sports leagues who are looking for a chance to give back as a group. If you're looking for an amazing volunteer experience where you get to see an immediate impact, come join us! This clinic will build confidence and independence for 30 people with disabilities in one short week. You won't want to miss it!

More details: All riders must have an appropriate personal bike available for the iCan Bike program by no later than Thursday (Day #4) of the program.  The goal is to transition all riders to their personal bike towards the latter part of the iCan Bike program so that they are comfortable with the bike they will be riding at home.  Parents may or may not have an appropriate bike available.   Click here  to learn about bike requirements and helpful tips for parents.

Parents/Guardians/Caregivers--Please plan on having the family member or designee who will be helping the rider at home at the camp on Friday, the last day of camp. The iCan Shine staff will train you on how to best assist your rider at home. Your student will have the best chance of becoming an independent rider if he/she continues practicing after the camp is over.
