ASBC's iCan Shine Bike Clinic

Date: 17-Jul-2017

What: iCan Shine Bike Clinic Hosted by Autism Society of Boulder County

iCan Shine’s iCan Bike program teaches individuals with disabilities how to ride a conventional bike and become a lifelong independent rider! iCan Bike uses a fleet of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and a trained staff to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike. Riders attend the same 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days (M – F) whereby they are physically assisted and encouraged by two volunteer “spotters”. Over the course of the 5-day camp the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. Watch this video to answer all your questions about the iCan Bike program.

Who: To be eligible to enroll, riders must be at least eight years old, have a disability and be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. Riders must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Riders must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds.

When: Monday July 17th through Friday July 21st- it is a  five-day camp, requiring riders to attend only one 75-minute session per day. Parents and volunteers must also attend a 1-hour orientation on the Sunday afternoon prior to camp.

Volunteers Needed: We need 14 volunteers per session for 5 sessions. All volunteers must commit to attending the same session for all five days. If you are interested in your group being a sponsor of this event through providing volunteers, all you have to do is round up 14 volunteers to attend the same session. Please contact Julie Darrow at info@autismboulder or 720-272-8231 if you're interested in this opportunity. If you are not part of a bigger group and would like to volunteer, please fill out the Online Volunteer Registration form.

It's a great workout and very rewarding to work with the kids as they achieve their bike-riding goals. Volunteers will run alongside riders inside the gym at Ascent Community Church. As the riders progress, we will move outdoors into the parking area. We need two volunteers per rider.  Volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

More details: All riders must have an appropriate personal bike available for the iCan Bike program by no later than Thursday (Day #4) of the program.  The goal is to transition all riders to their personal bike towards the latter part of the iCan Bike program so that they are comfortable with the bike they will be riding at home.  Parents may or may not have an appropriate bike available.   Click here  to learn about bike requirements and helpful tips for parents.

Parents/Guardians/Caregivers--Please plan on having the family member or designee who will be helping the rider at home at the camp on Friday, the last day of camp. The iCan Shine staff will train you on how to best assist your rider at home. Your student will have the best chance of becoming an independent rider if he/she continues practicing after the camp is over.

Schedule:  Each rider will attend one session each of the five days of camp. These are the available time slots.
